Trinity Women's Basketball Hangs Tough At No. 2-Ranked Amherst

Amherst, Mass. – Hannah Hackley had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Amherst College women's basketball to a 53-38 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball victory over the Trinity College Bantams at LeFrak Gymnasium this afternoon.  Trinity falls to 9-7 overall and 0-6 in the NESCAC, while No. 2-ranked Amherst improves to 20-0 overall and 6-0 in the league.

Trinity held Amherst to 36.5% shooting from the field, and 27.6% efficiency from three-point range but committed 19 turnovers.  A back-and-forth first quarter saw Amherst hold a slim, 10-8 lead after 10 minutes of play. In the second quarter, the Purple & White used 11 points from Hackley to post a 30-18 advantage at intermission.  The Purple and White began to pull away in the third quarter, outscoring Trinity, 13-5, in the period. The Bantams held a 15-10 edge in scoring in the fourth quarter, and senior captain Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) pulled the visitors to within 14 at 50-36 following a pair of made foul shots with 2:09 to play, but that's as close as they could get as Amherst pulled away to the 53-38 win.

Griffin led all players with 18 points and added five rebounds, while junior Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) pulled down a game-high 12 boards in the losing effort. Rookie forward Erin Cunningham (Wilton, Conn.) logged 10 points in reserve for Trinity which was held to 25% shooting from the floor and just 28.6% from beyond-the-arc.
