WATERVILLE, Maine -- Carylanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine) scored with 2.9 seconds remaining and the Colby College women's basketball team came up with a big defensive play by Haley Driscoll (Bedford, N.H.) to win the Colby Classic with a 66-64 victory over Saint Joseph's College on Sunday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

‪The Mules move to 6-1 overall and 6-0 against NCAA Division III opponents. Colby went 2-0 in the three-team Colby Classic. Saint Joseph's fell to 6-2 overall.

‪The Mules took a 64-59 lead after a jumper by Wolfington with 1:59 to play. The Monks, though, tied the game in a hurry. Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) nailed a 3-point shot with 1:43 remaining and Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) hit a jumper with 54 seconds left to tie the contest.

‪After a Colby turnover, Saint Joseph's missed on a jumper and the Mules called timeout with 4.5 seconds to go. A new women's basketball rule started this year gives the team calling the timeout the ball at the coaching box line on the other end of the court.

‪Colby head coach Julie Veilleux designed the play to get Wolfington open underneath the basket. The play worked so well that Mia Diplock's (Vienna, Maine) pass went directly to Wolfington near the block and she turned and hit the layup.

‪The new rule helped Colby and it gave Saint Joseph's a final chance with 2.9 seconds to play. The Monks threw it in to Cahill with her back to the basket about 10 feet out. However, the Mules merged on Cahill quickly and Driscoll was able to slap the ball away as time ran out.

‪Driscoll was 8-for-10 from the field for 17 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Caitlyn Nolan (Barrington, R.I.) was 6-for-9 from the field for 13 points and added four boards. Diplock was 3-for-7 from 3-point range in scoring 12 points and dished four assists, Wolfington scored 11, had three assists and three steals, and Desi Smith (Watertown, Wis.) had eight points.

‪Cahill had a huge day with 25 points on 11-for-16 shooting and 13 rebounds. McNamara added 12 points, four assists, and three steals. Emily Quirion (Augusta, Maine) scored 10 points and Emily Kehoe (Perkinsville, Vt.) added six points.

‪While the second half was close the entire way, Colby trailed 24-14 early in the second quarter. The Mules were still behind 29-21 with 4:26 to halftime, but used a 10-3 run the rest of the way to trail 32-31 at the break.
