Spartan Men Defeat ONU; Women Win over ONU, Tie Hillsdale

The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team picked up a 180.5-113.5 victory over Ohio Northern University on Saturday, while the women's squad defeated ONU 187-113, and tied NCAA Division II program Hillsdale College 144-144 in Ada, Ohio.

The win raised the Spartan men's record to 9-1 on the season, while the women moved to 9-1-1 in dual meet action this season.

The CWRU women picked up first-place finishes in seven of the 16 events during the meet, including a sweep of the relays to bookend the day.  The 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Suhan Mestha, freshman Noora Khiraoui, senior Rebecca Pakradooni and sophomore Jennifer Eurich won the event with a mark of 4:05.66, while Mestha, Pakradooni, sophomore Inez Moore and Eurich ended the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:42.80.

Mestha went on to sweep the backstroke events, winning the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.29, and the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 2:10.39.  Freshman Emily Budziszewski won both diving events with scores of 183.95 in the one-meter dive and 168.8 in the three-meter dive.  Pakradooni added a win in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall with a mark of 1:00.65.

The men claimed wins in 12 of the 16 events on Saturday, and also earned a sweep of the relays.  Finishing first in the 400-medley relay were sophomore Oliver Hudgins, senior Elliott Kerbel, senior Alec David and senior Aaron Tam with a time of 3:32.69, with the same quartet finishing first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.16.

Four different Spartan men won a pair of individual events, with sophomore Drew Hamilton finishing first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:55.63) and 400-yard individual medley (4:13.92), Tam finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.34) and 500-yard freestyle (4:52.51), Hudgins claiming the win in both the 100-yard backstroke (53.68 seconds) and 200-yard backstroke (1:57.44), and senior Connor Farrell sweeping the two diving events.

Adding wins on Saturday for the men were sophomore Aaron Pang in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.26), Kerbel in the 50-yard freestyle (22.07), and David in the 100-yard butterfly (52.69 seconds).

The Spartans will return home next weekend to host Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday, January 30th at 1:00 p.m. in the team's final home meet of the 2015-16 campaign.  Saturday will also mark 'Senior Day' for CWRU, as the team as will honor its six senior men's members – Jason Arne, Alex David, Connor Farrell, Felipe Gomez del Campo, Andrew Howes, and Aaron Tam – and the three graduating women's members  - Jackie Dowling, Rachael Loek and Rebecca Pakradooni – prior to the start of the meet.
