NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A fourth quarter upset handed SUNY Fredonia a 60-57 win over the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team Friday evening in the Hawk Center.

After Fredonia sliced the deficit for a close 47-46 margin at the end of the third quarter, a layup in the paint by senior forward Sabrina Macaulay gave the Blue Devils a 51-49 advantage. The Hawks would respond shortly after as junior guard/forward Kit Small (Slingersland, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) drained a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to put the New Paltz back on top.

Several minutes later freshman forward Sarah Sweazy tied the score to 55-all with 2:30 left on the clock. Junior forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) hit a jumper to bring the lead in the New Paltz's favor but Fredonia would capitalize on 4-of-4 free throw attempts by junior guard Alexis Cheatham to grab the victory.

The Hawks drop to 9-5, 4-3 and return tomorrow when they host Buffalo State at 2 p.m. in the Hawk Center. Fredonia improves to 12-4, 7-2 and continues its weekend road swing when it plays SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Both teams remained even in the first quarter, trading points for most of the period before the Hawks captured a 15-11 edge on four made free throws by senior guard Goldie Harrison (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) and a layup by freshman guard Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Urusline School).

The Hawks continued to push the pace despite a shot from beyond the arc by Cheatham to cut New Paltz's advantage to one at 4:25. New Paltz was quick to escape the Blue Devils as Small hit another 3-pointer and free throw to put the Hawks at a 35-28 cushion at halftime.

Fredonia held New Paltz at a 29.9 shooting percentage (20-of-67) while owning a 38.5 (20-of-52) field goal percentage and collected 34 points in the paint. The Hawks owned a 45-40 edge in rebounds and connected on 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) from the line while scoring 20 points off turnovers.

Small shot 5-of-12 from the field and made 6-of-8 from the charity stripe to end the night with 18 points. Irby added a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 16 rebounds, while chipping in a career-high five steals. Harrison added to New Paltz's high free throw percentage, connecting on 4-of-4 from the line.

For Fredonia, Macaulay posted a double-double 17 points and 19 boards while shooting 7-of-13 from the floor. Cheatham and Sweazy registered 13 points apiece for the Blue Devils.
