Late run helps Colby women's basketball beat Bates

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College women's basketball team used an 11-0 scoring run to end the game and held Bates College without a point for the final 5:50 of the contest in a 64-58 victory in the New England Small College Athletic Conference opener for both teams Friday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

The Mules move to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the league heading into Saturday's 3 p.m. home game with 14th-ranked Tufts University. Tufts, the defending NESCAC champions, took an impressive 53-50 win at Bowdoin College on Friday. Bates, which plays at Bowdoin on Saturday at 3 p.m., falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Desi Smith had 19 points, including an 8-for-11 effort from the foul line, for the Mules. Carylanne Wolfington added 17 points thanks to 4-for-6 shooting from 3-point range and added six rebounds. Haley Driscoll added six points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Mia Diplock scored 12 points and had five steals. MaryKate Caverly had six points and a team-high four assists.
Chelsea Nason had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats. All 10 of her rebounds came on the defensive end and she dished five assists. Lyse Henshaw finished with 13 points, while Bernadette Connors and Nina Davenport both had eight points. Allie Coppola had six points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
Bates took a 58-53 lead when Connors hit two free throws with 5:50 to play. The Mules, though, would score the final 11 points of the game.
Wolfington hit a 3-point shot with 4:53 remaining to cut the margin to 58-57. The Mules then took the lead for good on a drive to the basket from Diplock with 4:10 to go.
Both teams struggled over the next three minutes and neither team could manage a point. Smith had a 3-point play with 54 seconds to go to push the lead to 62-58. The Bobcats had three opportunities to cut into the lead until Driscoll hit two free throws with 10 seconds left for the final points.
Bates had a 20-11 lead after the opening quarter, led 28-27 at halftime, and took a 50-47 margin into the final quarter.
The Mules had a slight 35-31 advantage on the boards and hit six more free throws than Bates.
