Cabrini Rallies from 4th Quarter Deficit to Top Rowan 77-75 in OT

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cavaliers rallied from a 14 point fourth quarter deficit to score a 77-75 overtime win over the visiting Rowan University Profs in the final game of the Cabrini Holiday Classic today at Nerney Field House.

With the win, Cabrini improved to 5-6 on the season, while handing the Profs their first loss of the season, knocking them to 11-1.

Senior Meghan Martin had a career day in leading the Blue and White to victory, as the senior posted 28 points on 9-14 shooting, including 4-6 from three point range.  Martin also connected on the two biggest shots of the day, a pair of three pointers on Cabrini's last two possessions of regulation before connecting on 6-6 from the free throw line in overtime.

Classmate Dana Peterson added 15 points, four rebounds and four assists, while junior Tayler Holmes notched 12 points off the bench. Senior Mo O'Connell also snagged a career best 13 rebounds.

The Profs jumped out to an early eight point advantage in the first quarter, but the Cavaliers used a 11-0 spurt to take a 20-17 lead on freshman Nomi Washington's jumper.  Rowan scored the final five points of the period to earn a 22-20 cushion after 10 minutes.

Cabrini scored five points early in the second quarter to keep its deficit at 27-25, but Holmes' triple with 6:57 to play would be the team's final bucket of the period.  Rowan took advantage, scoring the final 10 points of the quarter, extending its lead to 37-25 at the half.

Despite its best efforts, the Cavaliers could not cut into Rowans lead in the third frame, as the Blue and White's deficit hovered between 10-14 points throughout the period.  With 10 minutes to play, Cabrini trailed 52-41

Both clubs exchanged baskets during the opening two minutes of the final quarter, as junior Ashanti Bishop's lay-up pushed Rowan's lead to 59-45 with 8:13 on the clock.

Less than one minute later, Peterson hit a jumper that sparked the Cavaliers on a 12-2 run to end regulation.  Buckets by sophomore Sabrina Hackendorn, Washington and Holmes sandwiched a pair or Profs' free throws before Martin's game-tying three pointers at the 1:12 and 0:22 marks.

While the Cavaliers found their offensive touch, they dominated the final period on the defensive end of the floor as well.  Rowan, the country's eighth leading scoring offense scored just nine points in the final 10 minutes and just two in the final 8:13.

Cabrini held the Profs to 0-11 from the field, including 0-3 from beyond the three point line, and forced eight turnovers in the fourth quarter.

Rowan missed four free throws in the opening 15 seconds of the overtime and Cabrini took advantage.  Despite a tough shooting day, senior Kristina Startare scored her only two points of the night from the free throw line in the opening minute of overtime, giving the Blue and White its first lead since 20-17.  

On the club's next possession, Martin found Washington for a lay-up before O'Connell went to the line a hit a pair of free throws. A Rowan jumper cut the lead back to four before Holmes hit one from the stripe and Martin's offensive rebound and put back extended the lead to a game-high 72-63 with 102 seconds to play.

Freshman Olivia Rulon's three pointer cut Cabrini's lead back to 72-70 with 27 seconds left.  While Rowan connected on 5-6 of its field goals in the final 1:40, including a pair of three pointers, the Blue and White was up to the task.  Cabrini went 5-6 from the charity stripe in the final 23 seconds to seal the win, including 3-4 by Martin and Holmes with the Cavaliers leading by just one point.

Graduate student Kate Matthews led Rowan (11-1) with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while graduate student Melissa Lake and sophomore Summer Crilly scored a team high 11 points each.  

In the day's opening game, Widener improved to 9-2 with a 79-70 victory over Eastern University (7-4).  Senior Brianna Wylie led the Pride with 26 points on 10-12 from the floor and 6-6 from the free throw line and grabbed 11 boards, with six coming on the offensive glass.  Freshman Emily Hardy notched her first career double-double, pairing 15 points and 11 boards.  

Freshman Reggie Robinson poured in 18 points off the bench for the Eagles in a losing effort, while sophomore Amanda Riiff added 16 points for Eastern.  Junior Emily McPeak chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The Cavaliers will return to Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, January 5, as it welcomes Immaculata University (2-7, 2-0 CSAC) to Nerney Field House.  The 6:30 p.m. tilt will mark a rematch of the 2015 CSAC Championship game.
