Eighth-ranked Wheaton tops 10th-ranked St. Thomas 66-58

Waverly, Iowa – The Thunder women's basketball team used a late fourth-quarter surge to earn a 66-58 victory against University of St. Thomas on Tuesday at the Wartburg Holiday Tournament in a battle of top-10 ranked teams. Wheaton, ranked eighth in the most recent d3hoops.com Top-25 poll is now 8-1 on the year. St. Thomas, ranked 10th in the same poll is now 8-2. The Thunder advances to the championship game of the tournament tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

The Tommies led 35-32 at halftime today and St. Thomas held a 43-42 at the end of the third quarter. The Tommies led 53-52 with 6:00 left in the fourth quarter when baskets by Katie McDaniels, NatalieRose Brogan and a three-pointer for Devin Kyler gave the Thunder a 59-53 lead with 4:30 left in the fourth quarter. Wheaton continued to maintain a lead from that point on as the Thunder shot 5-of-6 at the free throw line in the final three minutes to secure the key win against the Tommies.

Thunder head coach Kent Madsen noted following the win, "This was by far our best defensive effort of the season. We had a lot of players step up today, both in terms of our starters and players that came off of the bench that did a wonderful job." He concluded, "I was really pleased with the collective effort of our team today."

McDaniels led the Thunder with 12 points and senior Hannah Considine added 10 points with two steals. Brogan scored nine points for the Thunder and Kyler added eight points with three steals. Chantal Meacham contributed nine points, six rebounds and seven assists in the win. Keisha Clousing and Kelly Lawson each contributed six points in a well-rounded offensive effort for the Thunder.

Lucia Renikoff scored 14 points to lead the Tommies. Kaitlin Langer had 10 points with 13 rebounds and Kaylie Brazil tallied 10 points for St. Thomas.

The Thunder shot 38.3% (23-of-60) from the field in the win, including 29.4% (5-of-17) from three-point range. St. Thomas posted a 34.5% (20-for-58) field goal percentage in the game, with 37% (10-of-27) behind the three-point arc. The Thunder shot 75% (15-of-20) from the free throw line and the Tommies had a 61.5% (8-of-13) effort at the charity stripe. St. Thomas out-rebounded the Thunder 42-37 and held a 12-8 edge on the offensive glass.
