After Colorado trip, Pios get ready for conference play

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A 21-9 margin in the fourth quarter sealed Lewis & Clark's 69-46 defeat against the Augsburg Auggies in the Pioneers' final game at the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon. Augsburg won all of its games at Colorado College, including both games of the tournament inside the J. Juan Reid Gymnasium, while the Pios lost both of theirs.

Miyah Leith scored 12 points to lead the Pioneers while Natalie Kelly put in 11 points. Those two led Lewis & Clark in scoring in both games of the tournament. Hannah Steinhaus had a game-high 18 points for Augsburg, getting 11 in the first half.

The Pioneers will start Northwest Conference play next Saturday at Whitworth.

Halfway through the second quarter, the game was tied 19-19 before Augsburg took off on a 14-2 run to lead 32-21 at halftime. Sara Hogman led the Pioneers off the bench with six points, as the Lewis & Clark starting lineup had no one with more than four points in the first half.

Lewis & Clark (0-6) scored the first four points of the third quarter on a free throw by Kaitlin Mathewson and a jumper by Leith, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Jenna Orth and Marie Fitzgerald got the Auggies back on track. Orth hit another three with 3:28 left in the quarter to balloon Augsburg's lead to a then-game high of 16 points, closing the period with a 48-37 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, the Pioneers were stuck on 37 points until the 6:43 mark when Leith made a 3-pointer, the third and final three that Lewis & Clark made on 15 tries in the game. Following the make, though, Augsburg went on a 12-0 run to lead by 23 points with just over two minutes left, eventually winning 69-46.

Hogman finished with seven points in the game, while Lauren Wood added six. Kelley Koeppen ended the game with four points and eight rebounds, while Mathewson was the Pios' leading rebounder with 10 to go with three points.

The Pios shot 31 percent in the game, including 35 percent in the first half. Augsburg was 8 of 24 from 3-point range, shooting 46 percent overall. Jessica Lillquist was the only other Auggies player in double figures with 11 points.

Lewis & Clark turned the ball over 20 times, while Augsburg (5-1) gave it up nine times, as the Auggies held an 18-7 edge in points off turnovers.

After the conference opener against Whitworth in Spokane, the Pios play at Whitman on Dec. 5. The final non-conference games for Lewis & Clark are on the road at Claremont M-S, Pomona-Pitzer and Vanguard between Dec. 29 - Jan. 1.
