Hartford, Conn. – Senior captain center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 70-37 victory over the visiting Gordon College Fighting Scots in women's basketball action this afternoon on Ogrodnik Court in Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity win its home opener after going 7-1 away from Hartford to start the year, posting its fourth consecutive victory for its best fall semester record since 2008-09 at 8-1.  Gordon drops to 3-6 with its sixth setback in a row.  The Bantams have a 26-day layoff before returning to action at Rivier on January 7 and will not play at home again until January 22.  Gordon will play its next game on January 2 at Thomas College in Maine.

Trinity dominated play from the start, scoring the first four points on layups by Griffin and fellow senior captain Melanie Mills (Woodstock, Conn.) and leading, 9-2, after four minutes of play.  Griffin scored on a put-back with less than one minute remaining in the first quarter to give Trinity a double-digit lead at 18-7, and the Bantam advantage remained that way for the duration of the game.  A three-pointer by Trinity senior captain guard Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) as time expired at the end of the opening stanza made the score, 21-7, and another bucket inside by Griffin inside the final minute of the first half gave the Bantams a 38-18 lead at the break.

Trinity continued to build on its lead in the second half, opening up its largest margin at 59-24 on a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Emily Llerena (New Miilford, Conn.) with 9:14 left in the fourth quarter.  The Bantam defense held Gordon to 24.5 percent field-goal shooting and outrebounding the Fighting Scots, 47-35.  Trinity was efficient on offense with just nine turnovers and 23 of its 27 field goals were assisted.  First-year forward Erin Cunningham (Wilton, Conn.) tied her career-high with 10 points off the Trinity bench, while Mills had eight rebounds and two blocks, and both Raiti and senior captain guard Alexa Menard (Wallingford, Conn.) dished out five assists.  The Fighting Scots did not have a double-digit scorer, but sophomore forward Kristen Smith (Littleton, Mass.) had nine points and eight boards.
