Saints topple Captains in conference play

ARLINGTON, Va.—The Marymount (Va.) University women's basketball team pulled out their second Capital Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, holding off Christopher Newport University in a late battle, 49-44. The Saints move to 5-2 overall this season and remain unbeaten in conference play at 2-0.

Marymount had a comfortable 17-point lead going into the fourth quarter until the Captains went on an 11-1 run to get within seven of the Saints. Senior Kievanna Lacey ended the run with the Saints first bucket of the quarter with 3:55 left in regulation. 

The Captains would come within two of the Saints late until freshman Tyffani McQueen extended the lead to four after an important quick layup that fired up the crowd and her teammates.  Christopher Newport's Bailey Dufrene would go down and go one for two at the line to make it 47-44 with 16 seconds left on the clock, but the Saints managed to get the ball in play and burn five seconds off the clock before the Captains drew the foul.

Headed to the line for the Saints was McQueen, who hit the front end. Although the freshman rimmed out the second attempt, sophomore Leah Hurst came up big with an offensive rebound off the miss, eventually getting fouled and sent to the line with eight seconds remaining in the game. Hurst hit one of two at the line to give the Saints a five-point advantage, while the defensive held up for the closing seconds to maintain the 49-44 victory.

For the game, MU shot 41.9 percent from the field, while CNU went 33.3 percent. The Saints did their best work inside the paint for the afternoon, outscoring the Captains, 26-18.

Freshman Nicole Viscuso led the Saints on the offensive end with a game-high 19 points followed by Lacey and senior Miranda Krott who added 10 points, apiece. Viscuso and Krott also did work on the inside by hitting the boards tying for a game-high seven rebounds.

The Saints will continue on the road for a rematch against Messiah College in non-conference play on Wednesday,December 9. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
