UMHB women top Texas Lutheran 78-50

Seguin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team rallied from an early deficit to build a double-digit first half lead and rolled to a 78-50 win over Texas Lutheran University Monday night in Seguin. The Cru improves to 2-3 on the season with its second straight victory. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 3-3 on the year.

 

TLU opened the game with a 7-2 run before UMHB answered with a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the night at 8-7. The Cru led 20-12 at the end of the first quarter and stretched it to as many as 18 points before settling for a 39-27 lead at halftime. Texas Lutheran di pull to within nine points early in the third quarter, but UMHB was able to pull away from there and led by at least 19 points for the entire fourth quarter.

 

Jonelle Smith led the Cru with 15 points and she added eight rebounds. Destini Oakmon added 11 points and Bridjai Chaney and Tori Tucker chipped in 10 points apiece. Ten different players scored for UMHB and Chaney also pulled down eight boards. The Cru shot 50 per cent from the field in the second half and hit 46 per cent from the floor overall. UMHB also out rebounded TLU 45-37 and forced 21 turnovers in the win.

 

Bailey Champion topped the Bulldogs with 12 points and Kristen Lye had 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Texas Lutheran shot just 31 per cent from the field in the game and was just 2-17 from three-point range in the loss.

 

The Cru will continue its road trip with a 5:30 PM tip-off at Belhaven University on Thursday night. UMHB will then return home to host Texas A&M-International for a 5:30 PM start on Saturday.
