Cortland Uses Late 9-0 Run to Defeat William Smith, 70-63

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) scored five of her team-high 17 points during the Red Dragons' 9-0 run over the game's final three-plus minutes as Cortland defeated visiting William Smith, 70-63, in a non-league matchup.

Cortland (2-1) trailed 63-61 after William Smith's Melanie Patterson hit a 3-pointer with 3:27 remaining. The Red Dragons tied the game with 2:27 left when sophomore Taylor Miller (Freeport) stole the ball and fed senior Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) for an uncontested layup.

The Herons missed a rushed trey with the shot clock expiring on their next possession. With 1:36 left, Cohen fed Rice for a layup that put Cortland up 65-63, and after a William Smith turnover Rice converted on a 3-point play with 47 seconds left to extend the lead to five. Junior Cassidy Chapko's (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) two foul shots sealed the win with 21 seconds remaining. Neither team led by more than five points the entire game until Chapko's free throws.

Rice hit 6-of-11 shots from the field and all four of her free throws and finished with 17 points, three steals and three rebounds. Cohen connected on all three of her 3-pointers as part of a 5-for-6 night from the floor and ended with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Chapko added 10 points and a game-high five assists, while sophomore Annie Ulrich (Vestal) posted career highs of eight points and five rebounds off the bench. Miller and junior Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) each finished with seven points and six rebounds, with Miller sharing the team lead with Rice with three steals.

William Smith (1-3) was paced by Patterson's 20 points. She made four of her nine 3-point attempts. Mia Morrison added 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, and Gabrielle Eure and Olivia Hughes each scored 10 points. Krista Anken led the Herons with seven rebounds.

Cortland shot 45 percent from the field, 44 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point range, and hit 13-of-14 free throws (93 percent). William Smith made 39 percent of its overall shots from the floor, but only 26 percent from 3-point range and 57 percent (12-of-21) from the charity stripe.

Cortland returns to action next Tuesday, December 1, at Ithaca College in an 8 p.m. contest as the back end of a men's/women's non-league doubleheader with the Bombers.
