Ellis scores 30 in season opening victory

Junior Susie Ellis scored a career-high 30 points and the Bearcats scored 33 in the fourth quarter as Saint Vincent defeated the Allegheny Gators by a score of 84-62 to open up regular season play.

The first half was a back and fourth contest, featuring several lead changes and competitive play. The Bearcats got on the board first, as junior Babette Sanmartin scored the first point of the game just 51 seconds into the first quarter. A Hannah Carroll jumper would extend the lead before two Allegheny free throws cut the deficit to one.
 
Ellis found her groove early and often, scoring on a fast break layup off an Allegheny turnover, tying the game at 11 all with 3:30 left in the first quarter. Junior Jasmine Weems would score with four seconds left in the first quarter making the score 19-16 Allegheny after ten minutes of play under the NCAA's new four-quarter format.
 
Captain Mara Benvenuti found her way into the action to start the second quarter, as the junior stole the ball and found Weems for an easy lay in, making the score 19-18 Allegheny. The Gators would score five straight, before Weems hit a baseline floater to cut the Allegheny lead to four. Weems would find Benvenuti for a fast break layup at the 5:58 mark, giving the Gators a slim 24-22 lead.   On the next possession, Ellis drove to the hoop drawing an and-one opportunity for the Bearcats. She capitalized on the free throw, tying the game with 5:47 left in the first half.

Ellis would hit two consecutive treys off of Benvenuti assists to give the Bearcats a 32-31 lead heading into the locker room. For SVC, Ellis scored 14 while grabbing four rebounds. For the Gators, Emma Pellicano and Candaisy Crawford had five points respectively.
 
Allegheny scored first to start the second half, before Sanmartin drove to the basket to give the Bearcats a one-point lead. Sanmartin would continue to dominate down low, as she scored on a fadeaway jumper tying the score at 38-38. Carroll would hit a deep three, before Sanmartin netted free free throws on three straight SVC possessions giving SVC a six-point lead. Carroll hit another deep trey and Benvenuti scored with 2.0 seconds left in the quarter making the score 51-48 Saint Vincent.
 
The Bearcats dominated the fourth quarter, scoring 33 points as they were rolling on all cylinders. Freshman Maria Morgan scored first, hitting two free throws to tie the game at 53-53. Ellis scored 10 straight points as the Bearcats went on a 12-0 run, giving SVC 65-53 lead. Carroll continued her dominance behind the ark, scoring on two straight three pointers to extend the Saint Vincent lead to 13. Ellis went on to net two more three-pointers, one with 30 seconds left in the game, as the Bearcats rolled on to the victory. Individually, Ellis outscored the Gators 16-14 in the fourth quarter.
 
For Saint Vincent, Ellis scored a career-best 30 points, surpassing her previous high of 11. In fact, Ellis only totaled 84 points all of last season.

Carroll had 14 while grabbing 9 rebounds. Sanmartin scored 13 and Weems netted 11 to round off the Bearcats' scorers. For the Gators, Jessica Mrdjenovich scored 17 points while Pellicano grabbed 14 boards.
