Women's basketball edged by Rhodes, 65-62, in SAA semifinals

JACKSON, Miss. - - Although Chanlir Segarra posted 27 points for the Vikings, the Berry College women's basketball team lost to Rhodes College, 65-62, in the Southern Athletic Association Semifinal round on Saturday night.

The loss dropped the Vikes to 18-9. The win improved the Lynx to 19-8. Rhodes plays host Millsaps in Sunday's SAA championship game.

The semifinal game was a battle for possession as both teams fought for the lead throughout the first half, but Rhodes came out on top and led, 33-29, going into halftime.

Berry stayed within two points of Rhodes for most of the second half. Segarra sank 2 three-point shots with less than two minutes left to play to trim the lead. Trailing 65-62, Imani Smith had a potential game-tying three-pointer, but the shot rimmed out as the final seconds expired.

Playing likely her last collegiate game, Segarra was 11-of-25 shooting. The senior guard also sank 4 three-pointers, dished 7 assists and grabbed 6 rebounds in the loss.

Emma Cook added to the Viking offense as well, scoring 17 points on the night. Cook was 8-of-12 shooting and collected 6 rebounds.

Rhodes bested Berry in rebounds (38-to-30) and led in field goal percentage (48-to-44 percent). 

"I'm very proud of the way this team represented the program which we're building on and off the court," said Head Coach Stephanie Dunn.  "We worked hard and had an opportunity to celebrate many great accomplishments throughout the season."
