Kimes scores 1000th career point, as Women's basketball defeats Muskingum 60-50

NEW CONCORD - Senior Jordan Kimes scored her 1000th career point and recorded a double-double as the Ohio Northern women's basketball team defeated Muskingum 60-50 Saturday afternoon at Performance Court in New Concord.

The Polar Bears improve their record to 18-5 and 14-2 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while the Muskies fall to 6-17,4-12.

Kimes would join the 1000 point club as she scored her 20th point of the afternoon on a free throw with 2:18 remaining in the contest to give Northern a 56-44 lead.

Kimes led all scorers with 20 points on the afternoon and pulled down 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.

Junior Karissa Steffas added a game-high 11 rebounds and chipped in six points for the Polar Bears.

Junior Carly Thomas added 10 points for ONU, five steals and four assists on the afternoon.

Northern trailed the entire first half, falling behind by as many as eight points when the score was 15-23 with 2:14 remaining in the first half.

The Polar Bears opened the second half on a 14-4 run after a jumper by sophomore Britt Luck made the score 36-31 with 13:33 remaining in the contest.

After Muskingum pulled within 50-56 with 1:03 remaining in the contest, Northern made four free throws to put the game away.

Junior Brooke Espenschied made three of her last four foul shots to seal the game.

ONU won the rebounding battle on the afternoon 49-27.

The Polar Bears shot 22-of-56 (39.3 percent) from the field, while the Muskies shot 15-of-53 (28.3 percent) from the field.

Northern will return to action as they travel to Baldwin Wallace for an OAC matchup with the Yellow Jackets at 7:30 pm.
