Nor'easters overcome slow start to top Fighting Scots

WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England defeated Gordon College by a score of 48-29 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Wednesday night (Feb. 11) at the Bennett Center.

Big Blue's 16th consecutive win over the Fighting Scots (3-19, 1-14 CCC) moves the Nor'easters to 18-4 overall and 14-1 in conference games.

Kelly Coleman led the way for the visitors with 15 points, and Sadie DiPierro added all of her eight points following halftime.Alicia Brown totaled seven points and 12 rebounds for UNE, which held a 48-39 edge on the glass.

For Gordon, Brooke Kratche and Kristen Smith tallied seven points apiece. Sophie Linnell chipped in with six points and nine rebounds.

UNE held a 7-0 cushion after a little more than five minutes, but managed only just as many the rest of the way heading into the break. The Fighting Scots recorded seven of the last nine points in the half to make it 14-9 at intermission. The teams combined to go just 7-of-54 from the field in the stanza.

By the 13:29 mark of the 2nd frame, the Nor'easters had built a 31-12 advantage. Coleman and DiPierro scored five points each in the 17-3 stretch to begin the session.

Gordon pulled to within 15 (38-23) before eight straight by Big Blue had the hosts doubled up (46-23) with 4:23 to go.

UNE shot 40 percent from the floor in the closing period to finish the evening at 29 percent (16 of 55). The Fighting Scots converted at a 20 percent clip for the contest.

The Nor'easters will be in Biddeford on Saturday (1 p.m.) to face Nichols College (3-12 CCC).
