Three Players Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Defeats Rivier, 65-53

Hartford, Conn. – Three players scored in double figures led by junior center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) with a game-high 17 points as the Trinity College women's basketball team defeated Rivier, 65-53, in non-conference action on Tuesday night on Stan Ogrodnik Court inside Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams have won four straight out-of-league games to improve to 7-13 on the year while the Raiders dropped to 8-10 overall with the loss.

Trinity's defense was swarming all evening as they registered a season-best 12 steals and forced 19 turnovers. Griffin led the charge on both ends for the Bantams as she added four steals, 12 rebounds and a block. The double-double was her fifth of the season and the team is 3-2 in those contests this season.

The other two players to score in double figures for the hosts were senior swing player Taylor Higgins (Merrick, N.Y.) and junior forward Melanie Mills (Woodstock, Conn.) with 14 and 11, respectively. Higgins filled out the stat sheet for the Bantams as she grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists, while Mills pulled down eight boards. Sophomore guard Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) had a big game for Trinity, scoring seven points, grabbing seven rebounds and registering a game-high six assists.

Rivier was led offensively by sophomore forward Savanna Butterfield and senior guard Deanna Purcell who both recorded double-doubles. Purcell poured in 16 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds, while Butterfield netted 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Caitlyn Perry recorded eight points to go along with three assists and sophomore forward Chelsey Hussey scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench for the Raiders.

Trinity held a 51-41 advantage on the glass as the team improves to 3-3 this year when recording 40 or more rebounds. The Bantam bigs and guards were a force down low all night as they held a 38-26 edge in points in the paint. Trinity's largest lead of the night was 15 and after the opening minutes of action the Bantams never trailed. The hosts also did a good job moving the ball at a good pace as they doubled up the Raiders in fastbreak points, 12-6.

Trinity returns to action this weekend, Feb. 6-7, with a pair of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tilts versus in-state rivals Wesleyan and Connecticut College. The contest with the Cardinals is slated for Friday at 7:00 p.m. and the game with the Camels gets underway Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
