More news about: Trinity (Conn.)

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Trinity College women's basketball opened the 2015 calendar year with a 58-54 win versus Ramapo in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Griffin Complex in the opening game of the Gwynedd Mercy Holiday Tournament Sponsored by the Courtyard/Residence Inn Marriott. With the victory, the Bantams have now won two in a row to improve to 3-5, while the Road Runners fell to 4-6. Tomorrow afternoon, Jan. 4, Trinity will take on the winner of the Gwynedd Mercy/Bridgewater State in the tournament championship.

Junior center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) had her strongest game of the season for the Bantams, scoring a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) was the other Bantam in double figures as she netted 11 points, thanks to 3-of-4 shooting from beyond-the-arc, to go along with a game-high six assists. Junior forward Melanie Mills (Woodstock, Conn.) played well of the bench for Trinity, pouring in nine points while shooting 4-of-6 from the field.

Kellie Lane  paced the offensive attack for Ramapo with 11 points and Grace Elliot added nine. The Road Runners turned the ball over 16 times and connected on just 15-of-24 free-throw attempts. Free throw shooting was a factor for both teams as the Bantams converted on 13-of-26 from the charity stripe.

Trailing by four with six and a half minutes left in the game, the Trinity defense clamped down and held Ramapo without a field goal for the remainder of the contest. Down the stretch, the Bantams outscored the Road Runners, 14-6, while forcing Ramapo to shoot 0-for-7.

The back-and-forth contest saw neither team hold an advantage of greater than five points as there were 12 ties and 11 different lead changes.

In the first half, the Bantams fell behind, 6-4, early and responded with a 7-0 run to grab a five-point edge at 11-6. The five-point lead would be the largest of the game for Trinity as the Road Runners answered with a run of their own to knot the game at 11. Throughout the remainder of the opening 20 minutes, the two squads traded baskets. Trailing by three, Raiti beat the buzzer with a layup as the Bantams entered halftime down, 33-32.

Trinity did a good job of distributing the ball, registering 15 assists on 21 field goals.
