Segarra leads overtime win over Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Led by Chanlir Segarra's 27 points, the Berry College women's basketball team defeated Sewanee, 84-77, in overtime on Sunday afternoon.

The win improved the Vikings to 14-5 overall and 6-2 in the Southern Athletic Association conference. The loss dropped the Tigers to 10-8 and 2-6 in the SAA.

Scoring 12 of her 27 points in overtime, Segarra led the Berry offensive effort. She was 9-21 shooting and 8-9 from the free throw line. Segarra also made one 3-point shot and collected nine rebounds on the afternoon.

Jumping to a quick 8-0 lead, BC started the game off hot, but then battled it out with the Tigers for most of the first half and led 30-27 at halftime.

The lead quickly switched to the Tigers, when Sewanee's Savannah Rose made two 3-point jump shots less than a minute into the second half, putting the Vikings behind, 33-30.

As the two teams battled it out for the rest of the game, the lead switched back and forth between them several times. With twenty-six seconds left, BC was up, 70-68, and it looked like they had clinched the win. However, with three seconds remaining on the clock, Sewanee's Rebekah Faulkner made a layup to take the game into overtime with the score tied, 70-70.

The Vikings took control during overtime, scoring twice as many points as Sewanee in the extra five minutes and taking the game, 84-77.

"We showed great character to come back and get this win on the road," said Berry Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "We showed great resolve by playing well under pressure in the overtime to seal the win."

Three other Vikings posted double digits in the win: Valerie McLureEmma Cook, and Zarriah Pierce.

McLure had 15 points and was 7-12 shooting and collected six rebounds in the win. Cook had 14 points and was 7-13 from the field and had six rebounds. Pierce also had 14 points, was 4-9 shooting and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

For the Tigers, Jamie Chauvin scored 19 points and was 9-21 shooting.

The Vikings host Birmingham-Southern College in their next game on Friday, February 6, at 6:00 p.m.
