La Verne Women Fend Off Late Rally To Edge Pomona-Pitzer

La Verne, Calif. - Basha Brulee-Wills and Amelia Hummel both had double-doubles, but the La Verne Women's Basketball team was able to hold off a late rally for a 68-62 home win over the Sagehens on Saturday afternoon. 

With the loss, Pomona-Pitzer slips to 4-16 overall and 3-8 in the SCIAC, while La Verne improves its record to 10-11 overall and 7-5 in league play. 

Brulee-Wills finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds for Pomona-Pitzer, giving her eight double-double in 11 league games. Hummel added 12 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. 

The Leopards led by 11 at the half (35-24) and built the lead up to as many as 19 (51-32) early in the second half.  The Sagehens got the lead down to 10 at 54-44 with 7:30 left on a Hummel jumper, and pulled within single digits at 61-52 with 2:48 left on a Hitomi three-pointer. 

Brulee-Wills hit a jumper to make it 63-56 with 59 seconds left and an Alaina Woo three-pointer with 18 seconds left made it 67-62, but that was as close as the Sagehens could get. Emily Myers also had a double-double for La Verne with team-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds.   

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest.
