Colonels defeat Bison, 64-57

MILTON, Mass. – The Nichols College women's basketball team was defeated by Curry College 64-57 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday evening.

Senior captain Amber Litwinko (Berlin, Conn.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bison (4-15, 1-11 CCC). Classmate and fellow captain Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, Mass.) registered 12 points and three rebounds while freshman Allison Cerrato (Rockland, Mass.) tallied eight points and nine rebounds.

Senior Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) led all student-athletes with 19 points for the Colonels (12-8, 9-4 CCC). Classmate Samantha Corcoran (Hampton, N.H.) picked up a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards while freshman Nicole Rice also (Woburn, Mass.) netted 12 points.

Nichols held a 45-40 edge on the glass and shot 37 percent from the field, compared to 38 percent for the Colonels. The Bison committed 21 turnovers compared to 13 for Curry.

Litwinko started the scoring for the Bison with a layup a minute into the game. The Colonels jumped to their largest lead of the first half (13-8) with 13:52 after Beltz hit a layup. Nichols pulled to within one (15-14) after sophomore Julia Zawacki (Waterford, Conn.) converted a layup.

With 5:33 remaining in the first period, freshman Brooke Packard (Dudley, Mass.) hit a pair of three-pointers and gave the Bison a five point lead (25-20). The Colonels closed out the opening frame scoring, and claimed a five-point lead (33-28) heading into intermission, after a layup from junior Kerry White (Windham, N.H.).

Senior Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) opened the scoring for Nichols with a jumper 30 seconds into the second period. Curry responded with an 8-2 run, taking a nine point edge (41-32) after a layup from senior Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.).

The Bison had a late surge and cut the deficit to five points (43-38) with 12:20 left after Packard made a layup. The Colonels claimed their biggest lead of the second half (62-48) with just less than three minutes to go, as Beltz split a pair from the charity stripe. Despite a 9-2 run by Nichols to close out the game, Curry maintained its lead en route to a 64-57 victory.

The Bison host Gordon Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Colonels travel to Wenham, Mass. to face the Fighting Scots Saturday at 1 p.m.
