Warhawks Fall to Pioneers at Home

Neither team was efficient from the field in the game with the Warhawks posting a 29.5 shooting percentage and the Pioneers at 32.2 percent. Maddie Bare led UW-Whitewater with 11 points including a three-point play with less than a minute to go in the game that brought the Warhawks to within one, 56-55.

The WIAC's leading scorer, Alyssa Krajco responded with a jumper on Platteville's end of the floor with 27 seconds left. Malia Smith took the inbounds and drove all the way to the basket but the layup wouldn't fall and the Pioneers hauled in the rebound. 

UW-P was able to play keep-away to stifle the Warhawks' opportunity to foul until the 12 second mark. Taylor Lorbiecki sealed the game with the first free-throw of the bonus. 

The Warhawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game courtesy of a Smith jumper and Abbie Reeves three-ball. UW-Whitewater's lead would hit six, 16-10 at the 11:07 mark before the Pioneers scored nine straight to take their first lead of the game 19-16 with 6:32 on the clock. 

UW-Whitewater's Niki Lazar drained a three-pointer with just 10 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to two, 29-27, heading into halftime. 

Reilly Stewart got the Warhawks going in the second half with a three pointer on UW-Whitewater's first possession. Emily Jensen added a layup to give the Warhawks a three-point advantage, 32-29, with 17:07 on the clock. 

The Pioneers put together a 9-1 run to regain the lead. UW-P extended the gap to as much as eight at the 5:38 mark, 52-44, when the Warhawks started their comeback. 

Bare started the run with two free-throws to make it 52-46. The Warhawks increased the tempo and ran the floor on Platteville's missed shots leading to an Andrea Olsen jumper to make it 52-48. Olsen would come up big again just one minute later with a three-pointer as the shot clock wound down to pull the Warhawks within one, 52-51 with 3:33 left in the game. 

The Pioneers scored four straight to push the gap to five when Bare took over with less than 1:30 remaining. 

Reeves added 10 points including eight in the first half and a team-high seven rebounds. Smith registered four assists and three steals in the game. 

Krajco was the high scorer of the night with 18 points and led all players with 16 rebounds. 

The Warhawks will head to La Crosse to face the Eagles Saturday at 3 p.m.
