LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior Andrea Paphites (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) scored a career-high 26 points Saturday, but Virginia Wesleyan College's women's basketball team was unable to make that effort pay off against Washington and Lee University.

The host Generals used a 15-3 scoring run early in the second half to build a 51-37 lead that held up the rest of the way en route to an 83-72 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory at the Warner Center. The Generals snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series with VWC, winning for the first time since 2010.

Senior Brittany Glasco (Fredericksburg/Massaponax) pulled VWC (11-6, 5-3) within a 36-34 score with 16:47 on the clock, but triples by Shelbi Henricks (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) helped Washington and Lee (13-3, 6-2) pull out to the 51-37 advantage.  Hendricks scored nine points in the run.

Virginia Wesleyan pulled within nine points in the minutes that followed, but Washington and Lee, enjoying one of its best seasons in program history, was able to find the key baskets to keep the spread in double numbers.

VWC, which defeated Washington and Lee 73-63 earlier this season, kept the contest close throughout the first half.  The Marlins trailed the Generals by just two points at various points of the half, but could never find the go-ahead points. VWC tied the game at 13-all on a layup by Alexis Platt (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) and pulled within one point at 20-19 on a Paphites layup.  But, Washington and Lee held on to post a 34-30 lead at halftime.

Paphites hit 9-of-18 field goal attempts and 7-of-8 free throws to record her career-high total. She also pulled down five rebounds.  Glasco added 19 points, hitting 7-of-14 field goals, and led the team on the boards with nine rebounds.  Senior Symonne Newsome (Reistertown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) led the Marlins with three assists and sophomore Crystal Strother (Accokeek, Md./Brandywine Gywnn Park) reorded a game-high three steals.

Henricks led Washington and Lee with 19 points and 13 rebounds.  Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) finished with 14 points, Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va./Centreville) added 12 and Perszyk finished with 11.  Washington and Lee connected on 27-of-45 free throws, while VWC hit 18-of-26.  The Generals also posted a 48-40 advantage in rebounding.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Shenandoah University at 7 p.m.
