Berry handles #21 Rhodes, 85-67

ROME, Ga. – The Berry College women's basketball team topped No. 21-ranked Rhodes by a final score of 85-67 on Sunday afternoon at The Cage Center.

With the victory, the Vikings improve to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in Southern Athletic Association competition this season. Additionally, Berry finishes this weekend in a tie for first place in the SAA standings with Millsaps. The visiting Lynx drop to 11-3 overall and 2-1.

Berry senior Chanlir Segarra led all players with 26 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. She hit 6-of-16 shots from the field and converted 12-of-14 free-throw attempts.

During the first half, the two teams hung tight with one another as neither led by more than four points in the opening 14:30 of play.

During that 14-plus-minute stretch, Rhodes shot 9-of-31 from the floor (.290), but converted four three-point shots, including Symone Daniels' successful shot from the far-side corner to tie the game up, 24-24, with 5:34 until halftime.

Conversely, the Vikings hit 53.3 percent of their field-goal attempts in that same span (8-of-15), but also turned over the ball 11 times.

Berry ended the first half on a 9-3 run to claim a 35-27 halftime edge. In those final five minutes of the opening half, four different Vikings contributed points, including the final five by Segarra.

Berry shot 52.2 percent from the field in the first half (12-of-23) and converted 10-of-14 free-throw shots (.714), but also had 13 turnovers. In comparison, the Lynx turned the ball over three times, but hit 10-of-38 shots (.263) and were out-rebounded by a 30-to-13 margin.

Following the break, the Vikings bolted out to an 18-0 run to assume a 53-27 advantage following Segarra's successful layup with 16:14 left in the second half. During this spurt, Berry had four different players connect from three-point range, and Segarra contributed seven points.

"I think once they started playing full court, they started to feel like themselves again," said BC Head Coach Stephanie Dunn of the Vikings' strong start to the second half. "I think we got comfortable, started making shots and putting the ball in places where we knew we were good offensively."

For the afternoon, the Vikings converted 27-of-51 field-goal attempts (.529) and hit 82.1 percent of their free-throw shots (23-of-28). Additionally, Berry held a 54-to-31 edge in rebounding.

Also in double figures for the Vikings were Emma Cook (17 points, seven rebounds, three assists), McLean (12 points, six rebounds) and Valerie McLure (10 points, seven rebounds, four assists).

Daniels and Sarah Johnson scored 16 points apiece for the Lynx. As a team, Rhodes finished with 16 steals, including three apiece by Daniels, Johnson and Dy'Nelle Todman.

Before the opening jump, the Vikings' senior Mel McLean was recognized for her previous accomplishment of eclipsing the 1,000-point mark in her Berry career during Friday's night against Hendrix.
