Warhawks Fall to Yellowjackets on the Road

The Yellowjackets, second in the conference standings, jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 15:20 on the clock. UW-Whitewater's Maddie Bare scored the first points of the game for the Warhawks with a three-pointer to cut the lead to five, 8-3. 

Turnovers proved costly for the Warhawks as UW-Superior extended the advantage throughout the rest of the half. 

Faced with an uphill battle trailing 39-22 at the half, the Warhawks used a 7-0 spurt to pull to with 48-35 with just under 14 minutes left in the game. 

Less than a minute later, Abbie Reeves knocked down back-to-back three's to spark a 12-0 run to pull UW-Whitewater within five, 52-47, with 9:47 on the scoreboard. 

The Yellowjackets responded with six straight points to push the lead back to 11, 58-47. Brooke Trewyn hit a jumper from behind the arc to bring the margin back to single digits and the teams traded layups to make the score 62-54 with less than five minutes remaining.

UW-Superior registered a layup to give the Yellowjackets a 10 point lead with 2:45 left. With under two minutes to go, the Warhawks were forced to foul but the Yellowjackets held out for the win. 

The Warhawks improved their offensive efficiency from 31.8 percent in the first half to 50.0 percent in the second 20 minutes. UW-Superior shot a blistering 62.5 percent in the first half but the Warhawk defense held the Yellowjackets to 38.5 percent in the second half. 

Malia Smith notched her season high to lead UW-Whitewater with 15 points and added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Trewyn totaled 15 points in the game. Reeves recorded 12 points and Lisa Palmer led the Warhawks on the boards with six rebounds. 

For the Yellowjackets, Sally Linzmeier led all players with 28 points on 10-15 from the floor. UW-Superior is 9-4 and 4-1 in league play.

UW-Whitewater will head to Menomonie to take on UW-Stout Saturday, January 10 for a 3 p.m. tip-off against the Blue Devils.
