Bullets Advance to Tournament Finale

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) posted 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench to lead the Gettysburg College women's basketball team to a 56-41 victory over Hood College in the opening game of its own tournament inside Bream Gym Sunday afternoon. 

Gettysburg (9-0) advances to title game of its own tournament where it will face Neumann University (4-6), which took down Wilkes University (5-4) 58-45. The Bullets and Knights will do battle on Monday at 4 p.m.

Hood (1-10) found out early why Gettysburg's defense was rated third in the nation as the Blazers managed just five field goals and shot 13.9 percent in the opening half of play. The Bullets shot out to a 12-0 lead following a conventional three-point play by sophomore Kim Ryan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) at the 12-minute mark.

The advantage reached a game-high 21 on an offensive rebound and putback by sophomore Sara Graham (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) which set the score at 35-14 heading into the break. 

A full-court press helped Hood slice the deficit in half in the second stanza. After a three-pointer by Gibbons made it 44-24 with 11:54 to play, the Blazers mounted a 10-0 run with a steal and fast-break layup by Alexis Briscoe making it 44-34 with 8:51 to go. 

Gettysburg weathered the storm with junior Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) answering the call with buckets on back-to-back possessions. A three-pointer by senior Jenna Swope (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) boosted the lead with 18 (56-38) with just over two minutes remaining. 

The hosts held Hood to just 22.4 percent shooting from the floor. The Bullets also out-rebounded the visitors 49-38 and swatted away nine shots. 

Gibbons finished 7-of-11 from the floor on the way to her fourth double-figure effort of the season. Porter finished with 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and blocked two shots. Ryan finished with a career-high nine points, while Swope turned in seven points, eight rebounds, three assists, four steals, and two blocks. 

Taylor McGaughey was Hood's lone double-figure scorer with 14 points. Rachel Wiley added six points and 13 rebounds. 

Neumann used its outside game to get past Wilkes, knocking down seven three-pointers in the 13-point victory. Jessica Schlesman tallied four of those treys on the way to a game-high 20 points. JoHanna Metzger added 18 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots, while Sarah Roberts picked up 10 points and five assists. 

Chelsea Brown paced Wilkes, which faces Hood at 2 p.m. on Monday, with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
