Los Angeles - Junior forward Amelia Hummel scored on a put back off a missed foul shot with 51 seconds left to break a 56-56 tie and help give the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team a 61-56 road win over Occidental in its SCIAC opener on Saturday afternoon. 

Pomona-Pitzer, which closed out on a 12-2 run after trailing 54-49 with four minutes left, improves to 2-8 on the season and was led by 15 points and 14 rebounds from sophomore forward Basha Brulee-Wills and a career-high 12 points from sophomore guard McKenna VanderKley. Occidental falls to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the SCIAC with the loss. 

After the Tigers went ahead 54-49 on an Ashton Reid lay-up with 4:59 left, the Sagehens attacked the offensive glass, with Brulee-Wills scoring on the third change to cut it to 54-51 with 3:52 to play. Two Brulee-Wills foul shots closed the gap tp 54-53 and Reid hit two for the Tigers to push the lead back up to three. 

VanderKley answered right back with a pair of foul shots of her own with 2:35 left, and after the teams exchanged stops, Brulee-Wills earned her way back to the line. She made the first to tie the game with 54 seconds left and missed the second, but Hummel snuck in for the offensive rebound and lay-up to give the Sagehens the lead. 

Occidental milked the shot clock down on its next possession, but could not convert, and Brulee-Wills grabbed the clutch defensive rebound. Sophomore guard Alaina Woo then hit both foul shots with 16 seconds left, and an Occidental three-pointer was off target with the rebound going out of bounds, sealing the win for the Sagehens. 

Brulee-Wills shot 6-10 from the floor and added team-highs of four assists and three steals. VanderKley was 4-7 from the floor and 4-4 at the foul line on her way to 12 points, while Woo finished with 10 on 3-6 shooting (2-3 on threes). Reid had 15 points off the Occidental bench, while Tiffany Kho added 14. 

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts La Verne for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
