Mariners Fall in Music City Classic Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Maine Maritime Academy Women's Basketball fell to St. Vincent College on Monday night, 78-23 in the Music City Classic hosted by Trevecca Nazarene University. 

The Mariners jumped on the board first when Mary Badeen (Newport, Maine) hit a free throw, but St. Vincent went on a 14-2 run to close out the first half and take a 29-11 lead into halftime.

In the second half the Bearcats came out strong outscoring the Mariners 31-2 in the first eight minutes, on their way to the 78-23 victory. 

Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) led the Mariners with six points and a block. Charlette Bradley (Slidell, La.) and Badeen pulled down 11 rebounds each, while adding four points apiece. The Mariners outrebounded the Bearcats 46-45.

Taylor Mathers led the Bearcats with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a steal. Hannah Carroll chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Maine Maritime (3-6) looks to rebound quickly when they take on Fontbonne University (4-5) tomorrow in day two of the Music City Classic at 3:00 PM (EST). Fontbonne defeated Anderson University (Ind.), 63-47 on Monday.
