Balanced Attack Leads Devils Past Garnet

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team overcame a two-point deficit at halftime to post a 73-68 win at Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon.

 

The game was close throughout, with neither team building a lead of more than eight points. The Red Devils led by seven, twice in the first half. They went up, 26-19, at the 4:29 mark of the first half on a three-pointer from sophomore Helen Roberts.

 

The Garnet closed out the half with a 10-5 run, taking the lead on a three-pointer by Abbey Deckard, and held a 33-31 advantage at the break.

 

Senior Liz Schultz hit a three-pointer to give Dickinson the lead, and first-year MacKenzie Skerritt  put the Devils up five at the 16:04 mark.

 

Dickinson held the lead, stretching the margin to nine on a field-goal from Mairead Donahue and a free throw by classmate Myonie Williamson at the 9:20 mark of the second half.

 

Donahue played strong down the stretch, hitting timely baskets while sophomore guard Ellen Bair helped keep the Devils in front with solid free throw shooting in the final minutes.

 

Schultz led the Devils with 16 points, going 4-for-5 from the free throw line, adding four rebounds on the afternoon. Bair finished 9-for-10 from line, scoring 11 points to with four rebounds and three assists.

 

Donahue tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a steal. Sophomore Mary Martin added seven points and seven rebounds, going 5-for-8 from the line. Jennifer Smith and Kassidy Lesher each chipped in with eight points and five rebounds.

 

Elle Larson led Swarthmore (2-5, 0-4) with a game-high 32 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 8-of-10 free throws.

 

The Red Devils improve to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Messiah College in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
