Late Free Throws Lift Brooklyn Past William Paterson; Nicole Francomano Records 500th Career Assist

Wayne, NJ --- Senior forward Megan Campbell hit two free throws with 0.4 seconds left in the game to break a 68-68 tie to give the visiting Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team a thrilling 70-68 come-from-behind victory over the Pioneers of William Paterson University on Monday night at the Rec Center in Wayne, NJ.

With the win, BC improves to 6-3 overall on the season and extends its win streak to four straight. William Paterson falls to an even 5-5 overall on the year.

Campbell carried the Bulldogs to the win recording a double-double with 29 points and 15 rebounds, both game-highs. Her 29 points are a season and career-high in a BC uniform, as she shot 11-for-19 from the field, while going 7-for-9 at the line.

Senior Vanessa D'Ambrosi chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds, while classmate Nicole Francomano dished out 10 assists, to go with seven points. Francomano's ninth assist of the game, which came at the 1:32 mark of the second half on a jumper from Campbell, gave the Staten Island native the 500th assist of her career. Entering the starting lineup since day one of her freshman season, Francomano has played in 98 career games, while making 96 starts, to go along with 828 points, 501 assists, 344 rebounds and 266 steals. The two-time City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Second Team All-Star has been a key catalyst to BC's success in her time at BC, that has seen the Bulldogs post three-straight 20-win seasons (74-26 overall record), including two CUNYAC runner-up finishes and two Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Championship runner-up finishes.

Senior Nacirema Mann had a solid game off the bench for Brooklyn with eight points and eight rebounds.

The Pioneers had five players score in double-figures, including four starters, led by Brittany Harden's team-high 14 points, to go with seven rebounds. Julie Rovito had a solid all-around game with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Mary Haines and Nikole Williams each finished the night with 10 points apiece. Sara Luberto chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

William Paterson controlled the first half as the home team scored the first eight points of the game. The Bulldogs would answer with seven straight points to cut its deficit to one at the 13:53 mark of the opening half; however, the Pioneers would never relinquish its lead as the home team would eventually push its lead to as many as 11, using a 10-0 run to go ahead 18-7, with 8:27 remaining before the halftime buzzer.

The Bulldogs would again cut into its deficit and get to within three, 29-26, as the teams headed into the locker rooms for halftime.

The second half would see the visitors continue to chip away at the deficit and eventually take the its first lead of the night on a pair of free throws from senior Asia Foster, that made it 32-31, in favor of Brooklyn early in the second period with 17:49 remaining.

In total, the second half would see back-and-forth action, as the teams combined for eight ties and seven lead changes with the result looking to head into overtime.

After a pair of free throws from Harden that put the Pioneers up two, 68-66, with just 31 seconds left, the Bulldogs would answer with a layup from Campbell that tied the game at 68 all with 24 seconds remaining. William Paterson had a chance to retake the lead on a jumper from Rovito; however, Campbell collected the rebound following the missed shot with just 17 ticks on the clock. Looking to take the game winning shot, Campbell was fouled on her three point attempt in the final second, allowing her to go to the line for three shots and needing just one to give the Bulldogs the lead. Campbell would hit two of three as Brooklyn would edge out William Paterson to complete the comeback victory, 70-68.

"Great team win!" said head coach Alex Lang. "We fell behind early, but never gave up. We kept attacking and hit some huge shots late. Great win for us going into the break."

For the game, Brooklyn shot 40.9% (27-for-66) from the field, while struggling from beyond the arc, shooting 25.0% (5-for-20) from three. The Bulldogs also shot just 57.9% (11-for-19) from the line.

William Paterson shot 38.2% (26-for-68) from the field, including 37.5% (3-for-8) from three. The Pioneers struggled from the charity stripe, shooting just 46.4% (13-for-28) from the line.

The Bulldogs were able to squeak out the hard-fought win despite being out-rebounded 50-44.

Brooklyn will now take a much deserved break for final exams and the holidays, before returning after the New Year, when the Bulldogs will hit the road to take on City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival College of Staten Island on January 3rd. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
