ST. PAUL – Playing without its top scorer, the University of Northwestern lost an overtime battle with visiting Hamline University on Saturday evening as the Pipers outscored the Eagles 16-9 in the extra period to win by seven. UNW was without freshman Amy Berglund and her 17.0 points-per-game average, but the Eagles still shot nearly 60 percent from behind the three-point line.

Neither team was able to establish more than a three-point advantage throughout the night's initial 10 minutes, but after trailing 13-10, Northwestern steadily put some distance between itself and the Pipers as three-point makes by Jessica Cole and Kim Campbell had the Eagles ahead 30-23 with 5:27 to play in the first half. Tiffany Stubbs joined the long distance shooting party, and her three ball at the 2:47 mark gave UNW its largest lead of the day at 10. That double digit advantage was nearly wiped out in the final minutes though, as Hamline went on a 10-3 run to finish the half as Northwestern led 40-37 at the break.

The purple-clad Eagles scored five of the first six points of the second period and found themselves ahead again by seven, but Hamline came back with a nine-point spree that put the visitors ahead 47-45. The remaining 15 minutes of the second half were a back-and-forth battle: Campbell and the Eagles continued to make long range baskets while Jordan Sammons' inside scoring and Chelsey Bonsante's deep makes kept the Pipers even with UNW. Bonsante made one of six three-pointers with 3:44 to go in regulation to make it a four-point game, but Campbell and Chanel Madson came back with baskets to knot the score at 66-66. Neither Hamline nor Northwestern were able to score in their four combined possessions of the period, which included UNW going the full length of the court in the final nine seconds.

Hamline's Sammons, playing with four fouls, was the difference-maker in the extra period, scoring the Pipers' first two baskets. Madson's and-one play midway through overtime put the Eagles ahead by two at 72-70 before Campbell drained her sixth trey of the night to once again give UNW a slight margin, this time 75-74 with 1:34 to go. The Eagles went dry the rest of the way though, while Hamline was good for eight more points, five of which came at the free throw line with Northwestern being forced to foul, to give the Pipers their second win of the year.

Northwestern made 26 of its 64 attempts from the floor (40.6 percent), but the Eagles made 14 of 24 three-point shots (58.3), with Campbell going 6-7 from long range alone. Hamline shot just 33.7 percent overall and 29 percent from long range, but the Pipers brought down 22 offensive rebounds to give themselves the extra opportunity while limiting their turnovers to 11, compared to UNW's 22. Seven of Hamline's 16 overtime points came off of Northwestern turnovers, with four more coming on second chances.

Bonsante led all players with 31 points as Sammons added 24 points for Hamline in the Pipers victory. Northwestern countered with a pair of 20-point scorers in Campbell (25) and Madson (20). The Eagles' Regan Cooper was good for 11 rebounds, with Smith's eight boards and six blocks making a difference, especially when Northwestern was on defense.

Now 2-2 to start the season, Northwestern resumes its schedule of games on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Macalester College down Snelling Avenue in St. Paul. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the Scots' Leonard Center.
