Alakai paces Smith in loss to 15th-ranked Williams College

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – First-year Samantha Alakai finished with a season-high 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting but it wasn't enough as the no. 15 Williams College Ephs shot 50 percent from the field on its way to an 86-49 victory at Smith College Tuesday night in non-conference action.

 

The Ephs (3-0 overall) had three players score in double figures led by 15 points from Devon Caveney. Ellen Cook added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals while Lauren McCall recorded 15 points and four rebounds. Alakai paced Smith (1-2 overall) with 21 points while first-year Paige Marquez chipped in eight.

 

Williams led from start to finish and opened up a 14-point lead after the first four-and-a-half minutes of play. Smith went without a basket for a near three-minute stretch in which the Ephs scored eight straight points and bumped the margin to 24 at 32-8 with 8:09 to go in the half.

 

Williams led 45-20 at intermission while shooting 51 percent in the opening half and out-rebounded the Pioneers 27-18.

 

In the second half, the Ephs never let their lead dip below 23 and led by as many as 41. Kristin Fechtelkotter scored eight points in the stanza and picked up a steal and two rebounds to finish with three for the game.

 

The Ephs recorded assists on 20 of 35 field goals. Ellen Cook handed out a game-high five helpers while also collecting two steals.

 

Williams finished the game with a 50-to-29 edge in rebounding and outscored Smith 39-15 in bench points. The Ephs also forced 12 turnovers that turned into 19 points on the offensive end.

 

Katie Litman had four blocks and seven rebounds to go along with her five points. First-year Meghan Holland led Smith's efforts on the glass with eight rebounds.

 

Williams will host Worcester State on Friday, November 21 at 6 p.m. while Smith returns to action at home against Keene State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
