Second-half surges lift Warhawks past Tommies

Kristen Ruchti had 25 points and Mary Merg added 22 points, eight assists and seven rebounds at No. 11-ranked UW-Whitewater (24-4) away late for an 87-78 victory over the host Tommies (25-5) in NCAA second-round playoff action Saturday night at Schoenecker Arena.
 
The Warhawks trailed 39-35 at halftime but had just one turnover in the second half and finished the game making 25-of-28 at the foul line. Kaitlyn Thill scored 13 of her 14 points in the second half.
 
The Tommies shot 53 percent from the field and made 15-of-17 free throws but gave up a season-high 87 points and were denied a third consecutive trip to the Sweet 16 or beyond.
UST's Taylor Young scored 21 points and finished her career with 1,398 points. Jenna Dockter scored 20 and Maggie Weiers had 18 points and 11 boards.
