After missing out on the Iowa Conference Tournament in each of the past two seasons, the Buena Vista women's basketball team went on the road as the sixth-seed Tuesday night and came away with a big 63-59 victory over third-seed Dubuque.

The Beavers trailed 56-52 with under seven minutes to play before Susan Kies made 1-of-2 free-throws and then followed with a layup to make it a one-point game with 5:22 left.

Dubuque responded with two free-throws to push its lead back to 58-55, and then both teams went more than a minute without scoring.

Jasmyn Flynn-Graves came up with a big offensive rebounds for the Beavers which led directly to a layup for Shelby Wiederhoeft, getting BVU back within a point with three minutes left.

Another key offensive rebound by the Beavers led to another free-throw which tied things up at 58-58 with two minutes remaining.

Freshman Sidney Beckman then came up with a big steal on Dubuque's ensuing possession and then was fouled before going on to make 1-of-2 at the line to give the Beavers a one-point lead.

Dubuque tied things up with a free-throw with 1:18 left, but sophomore Lacey Vokt came back down and made a jumper to put BVU back in front for good with just over a minute to go.

Dubuque did have a pair of chances to tie the game, but had a pair of shot attempts in the paint go off target before Vokt finally came down with the rebound with five seconds left.  She then was fouled and went to the free-throw line and sank both free-throws to put the game out of reach.

Kies finished with a game-high 23 points to lead BVU, on 10-of-16 shooting.  She also hauled in five rebounds, dished out three assists and posted three steals.  Lexi Fisher followed with 15 points and six rebounds, as Wiederhoeft turned in seven points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Both teams shot under 38 percent for the game and combined to shoot just 4-of-32 from downtown.  BVU made 11-of-17 free-throw attempts compared to just 5-of-16 for the Spartans.

The win pushes the Beavers to 12-14 on the year, and the team will now travel to #2 seed Coe College on Thursday night for a 7:00pm tip-off.  The winner of that game will advance into Saturday's IIAC Tournament Championship game.
