Cabrini Women Score 69-62 OT Win over Neumann

More news about: Cabrini

RADNOR, Pa. – The fans who weathered the snow were rewarded today with an extra helping of hoops, as the Cabrini and Neumann women's basketball teams went to overtime before deciding today's CSAC match-up.  After 45 minutes, the Cavaliers improved to 19-4 overall and 13-1 in the conference with a 69-62 victory.

The win combined with an Immaculata loss gives the Blue and White a two game lead in conference standings with two games to play.  The Cavaliers are now in excellent position to host the CSAC tournament at Nerney Field House, where the team has won 27 consecutive games.

Four Cavaliers scored in double figures, led by senior Brittany Sandone with 22 points, including the game-tying three pointer in regulation and seven overtime points.  Senior Annie Rivituso posted her third double-double in the last four games, with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Colleen Stewart netted a season high 11 points, while junior Amber Keys paired 13 points and nine rebounds.

Both teams shot well in the early going, before an 8-0 run gave the Blue and White a lead it would carry for much of the game.  The Cavaliers shot 50% from the floor in the first half but couldn't pull away from the Knights.  Cabrini's lead swelled to as many as seven points with 3:50 left before the break, but Neumann scored the stanza's final four points, cutting its deficit to 32-29 at the break.

The first 10 minutes of the second half played out much like the first half, Cabrini held a slim lead but Neumann remained within reach.  The Knights took advantage of their opportunities midway through the half, using a 6-0 spurt to grab their first lead since early in the game.

With Neumann leading 41-40 with 9:32, the game began to go back and forth.  The final 9:32 featured six lead changes and a pair of ties.  A pair of Neumann free throws extended their lead to 56-53 with just 15 seconds to play.

A Neumann time out allowed the Blue and White to diagram a play that worked to perfection.  Sophomore Meghan Martin drove the lane and found Sandone behind the three point line.  The senior calmly knocked down the shot, tying the game at 56 with six seconds to play.

Following another timeout, Cabrini's defense forced a turnover near midcourt with 1.9 seconds.  The Cavaliers had a look at a game-winner but came up short, sending the game to overtime.

Cabrini wasted little time taking control of the overtime period.  Rivituso opened with back to back jumpers as the Cavaliers posted an 8-1 start.  Sandone's three pointer with 49 seconds left put the game out of reach.

The Cavaliers held the Knights to 34.4% shooting on the day and dominated the glass to the tune of a 55-37 rebounding advantage.  Junior Megan Decker narrowly missed a career high with 12 rebounds.

Senior Erica Marvel led the Knights (14-9, 11-4 CSAC) with 17 points, while junior Jessica Schlesman added 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

The Cavaliers will hit the road on Monday as they travel to Gwynedd Mercy University for a make-up game.  Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
