The Oglethorpe women's basketball team fell to Sewanee for the second time this season Sunday afternoon, losing to the home-standing Tigers 69-53 in Sewanee, Tenn.

The Stormy Petrels shot just 29 percent for the game, including 14 percent from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Sewanee shot 37 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Tigers outrebounded the Petrels 43-38. 

Oglethorpe did outscore Sewanee 25-2 off the bench, getting huge contributions from two players. Sophomore guard Ciara Hughes picked up another double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds while recording two steals, as well. Meanwhile, freshman forward McKenzie Fortson scored 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting.

It wasn't enough, unfortunately, as the Petrels fell behind early and never really recovered. Their only two leads of the game came inside the first two minutes. After that, Sewanee slowly pulled away for the rest of the half. An 11-5 run put them ahead 16-7 at the 13:26 mark, then went on a 14-0 run later in the half to take a 33-14 lead. They went on to lead 42-26 at halftime. The Tigers shot brilliantly in the first half, burying 10 three-pointers and converting at a 63 percent rate. At one point, they were 9-for-12 from 3-point range.

In the second half, the Petrels played the Tigers evenly, 27-27, and held them to 25 percent shooting, but the visitors could not get closer than 10 points.

The loss drops the Petrels to 4-17 on the year, 2-8 in SAA play. They're now tied for seventh in league with Sewanee. They will return home to take on Hendrix in the homecoming game on Friday at 6 p.m. It will also be Senior Night for the program, as they'll honor guard Kyana Jenkins for her contributions to the team. They'll then take on Rhodes in their final home game of the year on Sunday.
