Blankenship records 9th straight double-double in win at Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. -- Led by a ninth straight double-double from Jessie Blankenship, the Covenant women's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 65-50 win at USA South foe Mary Baldwin on Friday night.

Covenant picks up a much-needed victory as they improve to 5-12 on the season and 2-7 in league play. Mary Baldwin is still searching for its first victory of the year as the Fighting Squirrels stand at 0-12 overall and 0-6 in the USA South.

Blankenship has been the model of consistency for the Scots as she recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds in the victory. It was the ninth straight double-double and the 10th on the season for the senior from Lexington, S.C. Blankenship also added two assists and two steals on the night.

Alexis Storteboom joined Blankenship in double figures scoring with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds. Alex Quimby came off the bench to score seven points, while Morgan Woodward also added seven points. Rachel Price had a team-high three assists with six rebounds and four points.

Covenant took 23 Mary Baldwin turnovers into 19 points and outrebounded the hosts 54-39 with 18 second-chance points. The Scots connected on 33.8 percent (25-of-74) from the field and 14-of-20 from the foul line.

Both teams struggled to score in the first 11 minutes of the opening period. Covenant led 10-8 with under nine minutes to play in the half before heating up and going on a 20-5 scoring run to end the period. The Scots held Mary Baldwin to just two made field goals over the final 8:40 of the half and got contributions from several players to open the game up.

Covenant would hold a comfortable lead for much of the second half. Mary Baldwin cut its deficit to nine points at 47-38 with 6:07 remaining, but Covenant would get consecutive free throws from Storteboom and then a jumper from the sophomore to extend the lead to double digits once again.

Shanice Miles led Mary Baldwin with 18 points, while Lindsey Poirot registered a double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds. The hosts shot 32.2 percent (19-of-59) for the game and 11-of-14 from the free throw stripe.

Covenant will look to make it two wins in a row when they face Meredith on Saturday at 2 p.m. in USA South play.
