@OW_Panthers Women's Hoops Handle NYU-Poly in Skyline Conference Opener, 74-61

BROOKLYN,NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team used a 74-61 Skyline Conference opening victory over the NYU-Poly Fighting Jays Tuesday evening in Brooklyn, New York to snap a seven game losing streak.  The win improved Old Westbury to 3-9 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while sending the Fighting Jays to 2-6 and 0-1, respectively. 

NYU-Poly scored first in what was a seesaw battle which featured nine combined lead changes until 14 minutes left in the second-half when Old Westbury took the lead for good.  Knotted at 38-all, Chloe Mellon's jumper sparked a 21-6 run from 14:00 to 7:23 for a 59-44 Panther lead.  Nicole Voerg drained a three-pointer with 1:31 remaining to give Old Westbury a 72-53 lead (+19), its largest advantage of the game. 

NYU-Poly enjoyed its largest lead of the game with a 6-2 advantage just 2:01 into the game for their largest lead of the game.  The lead was short-lived as the Panthers answered with a 15-3 run from 17:43 to 11:03 to go up 17-9.  The Fighting Jays responded with a 14-3 run over the next 5:27 to go back up by three, 23-30.  NYU-Poly would take the same three point lead into the break, holding a 34-31 edge.

DeAndra Scott led the way with her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 20 points (8-19 FG) and 10 rebounds. Clarissa Gallagher combined 12 points and 10 rebounds (career-high) to record her first-career double-double.  Mellon made her season debut with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field off the bench.  Raven Pentz chipped in with 11 points whileJasmine Robinson added four steals. 

Alyssa D'Apice sparked NYU-Poly with game-highs of 23 points and nine assists to go with three steals.  Tabitha Larsen added 18 points and Sabrina Fletcher pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 37.7 percent from the field (29-77), 31.6 percent from three-point range (6-19) and 58.8 percent from the free-throw line (10-17) while NYU-Poly struggled to shoot 32.9 percent from the floor (24-73), 25.8 percent from beyond the arc (8-31) and 29.4 percent from the charity stripe (5-17).  Old Westbury grabbed a season-high 60 rebounds to win the boards battle, 60-47, while scoring 16 second chance points off 21 offensive boards (tied a season-high).  Old Westbury committed a season-low 13 turnovers and scored 21 points off 16 NYU-Poly miscues.


MOUNT SAINT VINCENT DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues play in conference action on Saturday (January 11) when they return home to take on the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins in Old Westbury, New York.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.
