Keystone Women’s Basketball Edges Wells in Non-Conference Action, 77-75

La Plume, PA – Ashley Evans scored 20 points, including 16 in the second half, and Chantel Blake recorded a double-double that included a game-high 15 rebounds to lead Keystone College to a 77-75 victory over visiting Wells College in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday night in the Gambal Athletic Center.  The Giants, now winners of three-straight games, improve to 9-2 on the season while the Express fall to the .500 mark at 5-5.

 

Keystone staked out an 11-6 lead just over four minutes of Tuesday's contest before Wells used a 9-2 run to take a 15-13 advantage with 12:37 remaining in the first half.  The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes and tied at 21-apiece, Evans hit a pair of free throws to put Keystone ahead and start a quick 6-0 run by the Giants.  The visitors battled back to narrow their deficit to 35-33 heading into the halftime break.

 

Jazmyn Robinson paced Keystone's offense in the first half with nine points and seven assists while Jerica Rode netted eight points in the period.  Blake netted six points and grabbed seven rebounds and Alyssa Cuomo also added six points for the Giants, who shot 35.9 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play.

 

Ashley Roser led Wells with 11 first-half points and Kaitlynne Knapp scored 10 points in the period with both players grabbing six boards in the opening frame as the Express doubled up the Giants, 32-16, on the glass in the first half.  The visitors shot 44.1 percent from the field in the stanza.

 

Wells took the lead on a three-pointer to start the second half before Blake put Keystone back in front with a layup.  The Giants were able to push their lead to 50-44 with 13:36 remaining on a three-pointer from Cuomo.  The Express was able to battle back within a single point before back-to-back layups by Evans gave the hosts a 59-53 advantage with 9:24 left to play.  Wells then utilized a six-straight points to level the contest and would eventually take a 63-62 lead with 4:59 remaining on a Roser lay-in. 

 

From there, the two teams traded the lead three times with Robinson giving the Giants the lead for good, 70-67, with an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:49 left.  Evans followed with a pair of free throws to push Keystone's advantage to five points before the Express got back-to-back field goals to make it a one-point game with 1:25 remaining.  Evans answered with a three-point play of her own at the 1:09 mark giving the hosts a 75-71 lead and, leading 75-73 with six seconds left on the clock, Cuomo iced the game with a pair of free throws at a last second lay-in by Knapp would not affect the outcome.

 

Evans led the Giants with 20 points while also picking five steals on the night.  Cuomo netted 17 points while Robinson finished with 14 points, seven assists, and six steals.  Blake ended the evening with a double-double on 11 points and game-high 15 rebounds while Jerica Rode contributed 11 points and three blocked shots for the Giants, who shot 35.8 percent from the field for the game, 17.4 percent from beyond the arc, and 60 percent from the free throw line.

 

Roser scored a game-high 25 points to pace Wells, who got double-doubles from Knapp (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Theresa Hernandez (12 points, 11 rebounds).  Hernandez also tied with Robinson for a game-high with seven assists while Lindsay Achzet tallied 10 points in the loss for the Express, who connected on 49.3 percent of their field goal opportunities while shooting 20 percent from three-point range and 54.5 percent from the charity stripe.    

 

Keystone will be home again on Thursday night as the Giants welcome in Eastern University for a non-conference game scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
