Transylvania Defeats Southern Maine 68-56

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Junior Alex McKenzie (Georgetown, Ky./Scott Co.) had 18 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Transylvania University Pioneers to a 68-56 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the championship game of the Scottsdale Shootout Monday night at the Rancho Solano Prep School.

With its eighth straight win, Transylvania captures the Scottsdale Shootout Championship and improves to 9-1 on the season.  With the Huskies see their three-game win streak stopped short and fall to 7-4 on the season.

McKenzie was 5-for-11 from the floor and 8-for-11 from the free throw line to lead three players in double-figures for the Pioneers.  McKenzie's game-high 16 rebounds, including six offensive boards and helped Transylvania to a 47-40 edge on the glass.  Sophomore Katelyn Smith (Hazard, Ky./Perry Co. Central) added 17 points, while junior Nicole Coffman (Liberty, Ky./Casey Co.) tossed in 15 points.

Senior Erin McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) led the Huskies with 16 points, five assists, four steals and four rebounds.  Sophomore Gretchen Anderson (Kittery Point, Maine/St. Thomas Acquinas) chipped in with a career-high 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field.  Sophomore Megan Pelletier (Winslow, Maine/Messanlonskee) added eight points and six boards despite suffering from early foul trouble.

Both teams shot below 40 percent for the game, the Transylvania was able to make up the difference on the offensive glass.  The Pioneers cleared the backboard for 17 offensive rebounds and scored 14 of their 68 point off of second chance buckets.  The Pioneers also had a huge edge in free throws, sinking 18-of-24 from the line. USM was 5-for-6 from the charity strip.

Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (6:00 p.m.) as the Huskies travel to Husson University for a non-conference game.
