FOND DU LAC, Wis. – For the third straight game, the Edgewood College women's basketball game was decided by five points or less, but this time the Eagles came out on top. Rachel Pope scored Edgewood College's final ten points of the game including going 7-for-8 from the line in the final 90 seconds to ice a 62-57 Eagles victory over Marian University on Saturday afternoon. In a competitive game between two evenly matched teams, neither side built a lead larger than five until Edgewood College (3-7, 3-4 NACC) increased their advantage to seven with 22 seconds remaining. In all, the game featured 11 ties and 16 lead changes. Marian's Dani Huray hit a three-pointer in the first half to put the Sabres up 17-12, but that lead quickly evaporated after Chelsey Watkins and Mariah Hill scored the next five points to tie the game. Danielle Dixon and Pope hit consecutive jumpers to go up four, but after a triple by the Sabres, Pope knocked down a free throw and the Eagles saw a 29-27 advantage into the break. After trading baskets again to start the second half, Watkins converted a layup to put Edgewood College ahead by five. Just five minutes later, it was Marian (3-7, 3-2 NACC) who pulled ahead following an and-one by Huray. After swapping leads, Huray drained a pair of free throws to put the home team up a pair with 2:07 remaining. From that point on, Pope took over knocking down a three-pointer for a 55-54 lead with 1:56 left. Paired with defensive pressure, Pope then iced the game from the line, hitting seven in a row before her last one with nine seconds rimmed out. The Sabres ran out of time to tie the game for a 12th time and the Eagles put their two-game losing streak in the past. Edgewood College shot above 40 percent for just the second time this season, going 22 of 54 from the floor (40.7%). The Eagles outrebounded the Sabres 43-33 while holding Marian to just 27.5 percent shooting. Pope poured in 20 points on 5-for-9 shooting and was 8-for-10 from the line. Courtney Spangler pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while Brooke McBain had 10 points and six boards. Edgewood College will take a week off for Christmas before battling Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.
