PASADENA — Elizabeth Messick did what she always does.

The Occidental College women's basketball team's star was dominant inside, helping Oxy overcome a poor outside shooting night to beat Caltech 61-49 at Braun Gymnasium on Thursday.

Messick scored 13 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked eight shots, a stat line that has become typical of the First Team All-SCIAC center. In seven games this season, the senior is averaging 9.7 points per game, 12.9 rebounds and 5.1 blocks.

The Tigers improve to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play, extending their winning streak to three games.

Ashton Reid was the one Tiger to have some success from beyond he arc, connecting on 2 of 6 from the 3-point line. The rest of the squad was 0 for 6.

Reid finished with a team-high 14 points.

Eda Graham added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers.

Oxy took a 30-29 lead into the locker room and then opened the second half on a 12-1 run. Caltech didn't get closer than six points after that.

The Beavers got 26 points from their bench, including 14 from Stephanie Wong and 10 from Kristin Anderson.

Oxy returns to action on Saturday to play the third of three SCIAC games prior to winter break, against La Verne at 7 p.m.
