Tia Perry Scores 1,000th Point as CNU Blows Past Southern Virginia, 92-58

More news about: Christopher Newport

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- In what would prove a blowout victory for the 14th-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team, senior Tia Perry would make it a memorable night as she became the 24th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. Perry was one of three players in double figures for CNU (5-1) as the Captains handled the Knights of Southern Virginia University (2-5), by a final score of 92-58.

The milestone bucket came as part of a big first-half run by the Captains Wednesday night. After checking back into the game, Perry knocked down a jumper on her first possession back, giving her 11 points in the opening stanza. Sitting at 990 career points entering Wednesday's contest, the mid-range bucket was enough to put her in the CNU record books.

The aforementioned basket put CNU up by 17 with 4:14 to go in the first half, and was the last shot in a 20-6 run that saw the Captains take control of the ball game. She would add another layup to make it a 19-point lead, and senior Nicole Mitchell ended the half with a pair of three-pointers to make it 22 as the teams headed into the locker room with CNU up 46-24. In the final nine minutes and 35 seconds of the first half, CNU outscored the home team 28-11.

Turnovers plagued the Knights from start to finish as the Captains secured an easy wire-to-wire victory. Southern Virginia turned the ball over 31 times in the game, and Christopher Newport capitalized, scoring 41 points off of SVU turnovers. In the opening 20 minutes, CNU held a 26-5 advantage in points off of turnovers, and also dominated the glass, putting in 16 second chance points.

While Perry had the headline, it was fellow senior Nicole Mitchell that would nearly steal the spotlight, with a season-high 25 points. Mitchell threatened her career-high mark of 28, while playing just 25 minutes in Wednesday's game. The 5-10 forward from Falls Church, Va. was dangerous from all over the floor, including hitting a trio of three-pointers for the Captains. She led a hot shooting night from beyond the arc, as CNU knocked down seven trey's and shot over 41% from deep.

CNU had an equally impressive performance reading the passing lanes, as the team would capture 15 steals on 31 Knight turnovers, led by a four-steal effort by senior Nicole Pandak. Kendra Stone, Brandi Holland and Lauren Cox each added a pair while all but three CNU players had at least one theft.

Southern Virginia shot the ball at a 44.9% clip, led by 15 from Morgan Hartvigsen and 13 by Tatiana Monsen. Hartvigsen had 13 points in the second half and led the team with three three-pointers. Crystal Cleveland added a game-high 13 rebounds to go with seven points, but added seven turnovers in the contest.

Three Captains finished in double figures as Mitchell and Perry were joined by sophomore Brandi Holland with 16. Perry finished with 19 total points, giving her 1,009 for her career and 21st on the all-time CNU list. Mitchell was 11-for-20 from the field and added five rebounds, while Holland knocked down a pair of trey's and added four assists.

Returning to action this Saturday, the nationally-ranked Captains will have a big test in their conference opener, taking on undefeated York College (Pa.). Just outside the national rankings according to D3hoops.com, the Spartans more than doubled up Penn State Harrisburg in their conference opener Wednesday, 84-41, and boast a sterling 7-0 mark entering this weekend's contest with CNU.
