La Sierra Hits the Boards in Posting Win

PASADENA, CA – A strong low post effort was enough for La Sierra to grind out a 63-55 win over Caltech in a women's basketball match-up on Saturday evening.

The Golden Eagles grabbed 57 rebounds, including 28 on the offensive end, which helped them hold significant advantages in points in the paint and second chance scoring. La Sierra won the paint battle 36-24 while tallying a 23-12 edge in second chance scoring.

For a majority of the first half the Beavers were in control. They built a 22-11 lead with 6:18 left in the frame. During that stretch first-year Kate Lewis contributed 12 points from in the paint, behind the arc and on the foul line. However, the rest of the first stanza belonged to the visitors. La Sierra finished the half by outscoring the Beavers 14-2 as they took a 25-24 lead at the game's halfway point.

La Sierra stretch that lead early in the second frame by scoring 14 of the first 18 points coming out of locker room. Down 39-29 with 14:41 left in the game, Caltech fought back with a scoring spurt of their own. The Beavers went on a 10-4 scoring run to get their deficit down to six points just before the midway point of the stanza.

Unfortunately for the home standing Beavers, La Sierra responded as they stretched their lead to 54-39 over the next four minutes. Down by 15 points with 5:44 left, the Beavers mounted one final charge. A Grace Leishman three-pointer with 37 ticks on the clock brought the Caltech deficit down to 60-55. However, they couldn't draw any closer as the Golden Eagles grabbed the win.

Lewis led all scorers with a 27-point, 11-rebound effort. It is the second consecutive game the first-year has posted a double-double. Bridget Connor chipped in a 10-point evening for the Beavers.

The Golden Eagles were paced by Natalia Hathorne's 22 points while Joirdon Jones added a 19-point performance. Kristen Brummett came off the bench to grab a game high 14 rebounds.
