Rochester Women Grind Out First Round Wendy's Classic Win

GENESEO, N.Y. – Points were hard to come by both early and late, but the University of Rochester held on for a 56-46 victory over the College at Brockport in the first round of the Wendy's College Classic at SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday night.

The Yellowjackets move into the semifinals on Thursday evening at 6 pm at Roberts Wesleyan College. Rochester, seeded second in the eight team field, will play the winner of Tuesday's late game between SUNY Geneseo and RIT.

Ally Zywicki led all players with a game-high 19 points. Loren Wagner and Katie Weiner scored eight points apiece. Rochester won its third straight game and improved to 4-2.

Faith Welch led Brockport with 13 points. Bree Fortney and Hannah Rehbaum scored 10 points apiece. This was the first loss of the season for Brockport (3-1). The Golden Eagles are the tournament's seventh seed. 

The teams were tied at 13-13 after Rehbaum connected from the top of the key. Rochester closed the half with a 13-2 run to take a 26-15 lead into the locker room. Weiner and Zywicki scored four points apiece in the burst.

In the early moments of the second half, Brockport got six points from Fortney, including back to back layups, to pull within 29-22 with just over two minutes elapsed. Zywicki sank a three-pointer from the top of the key to ignite a 12-2 Rochester burst that opened the margin to 17, 41-24. Five players scored in the run. Tylar Guerrieri hit a running hook in the lane, then made one of two from the line. Rehbaum scored the Brockport basket, connecting on a 16-footer from right wing.

The lead was still 17, 47-30, after a layup by Sarah Kaminsky. Brockport crept within 50-39 after a mini- 9-3 run. Wagner made a layup with just over four minutes to play (52-39). The Yellowjacket shooting turned cold and a three-pointer by Welch got the Golden Eagles within 52-44 in the final minute.

Wagner, Zywicki, and Kelsey Hurley combined to hit four free throws in the last 30 seconds and secured the win.

Neither team shot well in the first half. Brockport hit five of 28 (18%) with three of the makes coming beyond the arc (3-8, 38%). Rochester made eight shots in 31 tries (26%), two of nine outside the arc (22%). 

In the second half, Brockport was 14 of 24 (58%) with Fortney scoring all 10 of her points in the period. Rochester was 11 of 24 (46%).

Zywicki had three assists and four steals. Wagner had four assists and grabbed nine rebounds. Rochester held a 46-36 advantage on the glass.
