Toms pull out road win at Stevens Point

Junior center Maggie Weiers had 16 points, six rebounds and four blocks as No. 5-ranked St. Thomas (2-1) held off No. 23-ranked UW-Stevens Point (2-1), 48-43, in Thursday night's non-conference women's basketball game in Stevens Point, Wis.

The Toms outscored the Pointers 5-0 over the final 1:46, started by Weiers inside basket. Kelly Brandenburg's offensive rebound and putback with 29 seconds to go helped UST ice the victory.

Taylor Young added 12 points and 11 rebounds and Anna Smith had eight points, six boards and four steals. UST overcame 35-percent shooting as it had only 12 turnovers.

The game was tied 19-19 at halftime. UST never trailed in the second half although the game was tied on three occasions. The Tommies broke to a 10-point lead at 30-20 but four 3-pointers helped Stevens Point gradually erase the lead.

The Tommies' defense helped hold the Pointers to 27 percent shooting (15-of-55).

St. Thomas was playing its third road game, all against teams that reached the 2012-13 NCAA playoffs.
