Cortland Women Dial Long Distance in 89-46 Win vs. SUNYIT

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Juniors Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton) and Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) combined for 31 points and seven of Cortland's 10 made 3-pointers as the Red Dragons defeated visiting SUNYIT, 89-46, in a non-league matchup.

Byrnes scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the first half and Wolstenholme registered 12 of her 14 points in the opening period as Cortland (3-1) raced out to a 50-22 halftime lead. Wolstenholme made all four of her first-half 3-point attempts and finished 4-for-6 from the arc. Byrnes was 7-for-14 from the field in the game, 3-for-7 from 3-point range.

Sophomore Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Senior Jeannette Harris (Manhattan/Food & Finance) finished with 10 points and five boards, senior Megan Touhey (Maine/Maine-Endwell) had nine points and nine rebounds and senior Grace Williamson (Olean) recorded a game-high 11 rebounds, eight in the first half.

Williamson, Touhey and Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) each had three assists. Junior Sarah Seger (Wantagh/L.I. Lutheran) and junior Rae Frasier (Schenectady) grabbed six rebounds each.

SUNYIT (1-2) was led by Tierney McGlynn's (Watervliet) eight points and four assists. Lauren Knowles (Salisbury Mills/Washingtonville) scored seven points and Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater) added six points and six rebounds.

Cortland finished 10-of-29 from the 3-point line, including 9-of-21 accuracy in the first half. The Red Dragons shot 41 percent from the floor for the game compared to just 24 percent for the Wildcats.

Byrnes made two treys in the first four minutes as Cortland opened an 8-0 lead. Her third 3-pointer made it 13-3 with 14:20 left, and Wolstenholme followed with two threes to put Cortland up 19-3 with 12:58 left in the half. Wolstenholme's three with 9:45 left gave the Red Dragons a 26-6 advantage, and the margin grew to 25 after a Touhey trey at the 9:21 mark and two free throws with 7:55 left.

Cortland will play at St. Lawrence on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m.
