SPOKANE, Wash. -- Whitman cruised to its second victory of the year tonight, downing Pomona-Pitzer by twenty-eight points, 84-56, at the Whit Classic, hosted by Whitworth College. The Missionaries took control of the game early and never surrendered the lead as they improve to 2-0 in the early season. The Sagehens drop to 0-2.

Said Whitman head coach Michelle Ferenz after the game, "It was a great team effort in finishing a great first weekend.  Everyone contributed and that is what we need to be successful in conference play."

Whitman held a 20 point lead at half and it was never seriously challenged in the second stanza. Utilizing its entire bench, Whitman slowly built on its lead until the final buzzer sounded.

Senior post Meghan White tied a career high with 16 points and had 7 rebounds for the Missionaries. Whitman was led by senior forward Sarah Anderegg who paced the Missionaries with 21 points and 9 boards. Hailey McDonald, starting at the shooting guard position, poured in a career-best 13 points. Heather Johns added 12 to give the Whits four players in double figures.

In the first half, the Missionaries opened up an early 9-3 lead. Pomona-Pitzer closed the gap to 11-8, but that was as close as the Sagehens would get. Whitman grabbed a double digit lead at 26-15 after Meghan White scored 6 points in a row, the final hoop coming on a follow-up.  Pitzer scored a hoop before the Whits, then, went on a 10-0 run to make it a 19 point lead, 36-17. Whitman went into the intermission with a comfortable twenty point cushion.

The Missionaries' defense held Pitzer to 36 % from the field, while the Missionaries shot just over 44-percent (51.5 % in the second half). On the boards, Whitman held a 50 to 38 advantage.

The Sagehens got 15 points and 9 rebounds from Basha Brulee-Wills, and 13 points and 11 boards from Jenn Okonkwo.

Whitman's 84 points is the teams' highest scoring output since it defeated Lewis & Clark, 88-72, back on January 4 -- a 15 game stretch.

The Missionaries are back in action on November 22 when they face Redlands in Santa Cruz, California. Tip-off is at 3 pm.
