SALEM, Va. -- Rookie Kelly Jones made her Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament debut an impressive one as she scored a season-high 18 points to lead Virginia Wesleyan College to a 60-47 victory over Shenandoah University at the Civic Center. The victory moves Virginia Wesleyan (18-8) into a semifinal game on Saturday, Feb. 23, against defending ODAC champion Guilford College (22-4) at 3 p.m.  Lynchburg College (18-9) will face off with Eastern Mennonite University (20-5) in the other semifinal game beginning at 1 p.m. Jones (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) put on a long-distance shooting show as she provided the Marlins with key points by nailing a season-best 6-of-9 triples. Her six treys tie the third highest single-game total in VWC history and were just one off the Marlin rookie record of seven set by Martha Sainz in 1990. Virginia Wesleyan launched 35 triples in the game and hit 12. Shenandoah (12-15) trailed only 16-13 midway through the first half when Virginia Wesleyan took control with a 14-3 run.  Jones hit two triples in the surge that gave the Marlins a 30-16 lead with 5:12 remaining in the first half.  VWC went on to lead 33-22 at halftime. The Hornets cut the spread to eight points early in the second half, before Virginia Wesleyan connected on three consecutive triples...one by sophomore Sarah Seipp (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and two more by Jones to open a 42-29 lead. Virginia Wesleyan continued to pull away in the ensuing minutes as junior Symonne Newsome (Reistertown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and sophomores Nancy Kelly (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and Brittany Glasco (Fredericksburg/Massaponax) contributed to the scoring to help the Marlins open up their largest lead at 48-31 with 12:29 remaining to be played. Shenandoah battled back to pull within a 53-47 score with 2:49 to play, but Glasco hit a jumper and Jones canned another triple following a Hornet turnover to push the VWC lead back to 58-47 with 1:28 on the clock. Glasco finished with 12 points for the Marlins, followed by sophomore Andrea Paphites (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) with seven. Kelly and Glasco led VWC rebounding with six each. Crystal Petrus led Shenandoah with 16 points. --AMDG--
