Reading, Pa. (Feb. 2, 2013) - Alvernia University (8-13, 5-9) got a clutch jumper from Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic), and were just good enough from the foul line late in the game to hang on for a 60-58 win over visiting Elizabethtown (11-9, 8-6) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action.  Fortna's jumper put the Crusaders up 57-56, and three free throws from three different players maintained the lead.

In what was a slow-starting first half for both teams, Alvernia battled for the 9-7 lead at 13:25 thanks to five early points from Fortna.  The Blue Jays answered with a 13-0 run between 12:18 and 8:28 to take the 20-9 lead before a jumper from Kayla Long (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) ended the Blue Jay run.  The Crusaders continued to close the gap with four good free throws from Katelyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./ Conrad Weiser) to bring Alvernia within five at 20-15.

Two more good free throws and a layup from Fortna cut E-Town's lead to just three, 22-19 at 5:32.  The Blue Jays answered with a three, and the rest of the half ended with the Blue Jays netting five points and Alvernia getting six--giving the Blue Jays the 27-24 halftime lead.

Two quick jumpers from Brittany Young (Columbus, NJ/North Burlington) and a layup from Yoh gave Alvernia the 30-29 lead at 18:19, their first lead since 13:25 in the first half.  After some back-and-forth and a few lead changes, the Blue Jays took the six-point lead, 38-32 at 15:22.  The Crusaders bounced back, scoring eight of the next ten points, to get within two points, 40-38 at 13:14.

A big-time layup from Mya Lobb (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) tied the game 42-42, a three from Chelseas Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) put Alvernia up 45-42, and a jumper from Kelsey Wolf (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) gave the Crusaders a 47-42 lead, their largest of the game.  E-Town stayed in it with a three and a couple of good free throws, and eventually took the 49-48 lead at 7:16.

A jumper from Young put Alvernia back in the lead, while a clutch layup from Lobb, a free throw, and Fortna's jumper put them ahead 57-56 before Elizabethtown answered to take the 58-57 lead with under a minute remaining. A foul put Yoh on the line where she drained her first shot for the tie, and a Lobb steal and free throw put Alvernia up for good 59-58.

Yoh led Alvernia with 15 points, while Fortna added 12.

Alvernia is back in action on Wed. Feb. 6th when they travel to Arcadia for another Commonwealth Conference game at 6:00 p.m.
